Wood Shingle Roof Replacement in San Diego by TR Construction

Over 25 years ago wood shingle roof systems were very common in San Diego. But over time they have been found to be highly flammable and are being replaced at a rapid rate. With new local fire codes, we will no longer find these roofs in existence in the next few years. You’ll notice that when the wood shingles are torn off, there are wood slat boards known as “skip sheeting” underneath. Before the new roofing material is applied, plywood or OSB board is installed on top to lengthen the life of the roof.

Watch the entire process from tile tear off to replacing the tiles with shingles. If your tile roof is leaking or you want to change the look of your home, shingle roofing or composition roofing is a great choice. In San Diego, this type of roofing system is far more durable than a flat roof or tile roof system.

Laying Shingle Roofing in San Diego by TR Construction

In San Diego and surrounding areas one of the most popular types of roofing is asphalt shingle roofing, more commonly known as “composition” roofing. This type of roofing system is far more durable than a flat roof or tile roof system. There are different types of asphalt shingles, from a flat looking shingle, to a shingle with profile and definition than high grade asphalt shingle with a higher definition and a more complex pattern looking almost like a shake roof system. The most common asphalt shingle that we use here in San Diego is a dimensional 30 yr or a dimensional lifetime shingle.

On the jobsite: San Diego Tile Roof Before and After

It is amazing how replacing the old wood shake roof on this San Diego house completely changed how it looks. It took decades off its appearance!

Many homeowners are replacing the old wood shingle roofs because they are highly flammable and San Diego is extremely susceptible to wild fires.

On this roof we first removed the old wood shingles and then installed 4x8 osb sheeting on top of the existing skip sheeting to provide a solid surface on which to install a new tile roof. We then installed a double layer of 40# felt paper underlayment on top of the new sheeting.

Once the roof was protected from the weather we built two skylight openings over the main roof area as you can see in the "after picture" to brighten up the living space with natural light.

When the roof was prepped and ready for tile, we installed an Eaglelite Capistrano 3706 Grand Canyon lightweight concrete tile roof system. On this particular home the lightweight tile option allowed for an install with no structural modifications.

As you can see below the roof looks fantastic and the owner is extremely happy with the job.
